What safety procedures should I follow with my rollator or walker?

  • Clear pathways of power cords and other obstacles to prevent potential falls or slipping
  • Verify stability of equipment prior to use
  • Periodically check to make sure all parts are secure and tight
  • Adjust equipment for proper height and fit
  • Always follow specific instructions from your physician
  • Be careful when navigating curbs or steps
  • Be careful when walking on uneven surfaces
  • Fully engage brakes before sitting in the seat
  • Keep your wrists straight and firmly grasp the handgrips. Your first step should be even with the back two legs of the walker, followed by a second step into the middle of the walker. Your feet should not meet side by side unless you are stopping.

What is the purpose of a bedside commode?
A bedside commode provides an extension of the bathroom commode at the bedside or other area. By bringing the commode closer, you have less distance to travel and in some cases, can perform these activities independently. You must be able to stand, pivot and sit down safely while unattended.

What safety procedures should I follow for a manual wheelchair?

  • Engage wheel locks before attempting to transfer into or out of the wheelchair
  • Properly adjust foot-rests for leg length
  • Keep upper leg (thigh) parallel with floor
  • Keep feet flat on footplates
  • Do not allow pressure under the legs at the front of the seat
  • Do not attempt to pick up an object from the floor while sitting in a wheelchair. This could cause tipping out of the wheelchair.
  • Periodically check to make sure all parts are secure and tight

What is the purpose of an adjustable bed?
Adjustable beds are designed for individuals who need to change positions frequently. This includes the height of the bed and elevation of the head and/or foot of the bed. The hand control has buttons that adjust the height of the head and foot sections.

What safety procedures should I follow for my adjustable bed?

  • If liquid spills on the bed, immediately unplug the bed and clean up the liquid
  • Always use side rails
  • Engage the locks of at least two of the bed wheels at all times
  • Do not extend any extremities over the side or between the bed rails
  • Keep loose clothing and hair away from moving parts
  • Never place anything under the bed, including people
  • Allow only one person on the bed at one time
  • Do not smoke in bed

What is the purpose of a low air loss mattress?
A low air loss mattress is a medical mattress used for patients at risk of, or under treatment for, skin ulcers and bedsores. This is accomplished by “floating” the patient on air-filled cells while circulating air across the skin to reduce moisture and help maintain a constant skin interface pressure.

What safety procedures should I follow with my low air loss mattress?

  • Do not use while bathing
  • Do not place into water or other liquids
  • Closely supervise children or invalids using this product
  • Never block the air openings
  • Never place on a soft surface, such as a standard mattress or couch
  • Keep the air opening free of lint, hair and other similar particles
  • Never drop or insert any object into air opening or hose
  • Only use attachments recommended by the manufacturer
